"Mastering & understand Golgi Apparatus: Function, Structure & Products in Minutes - Graphic Tablet Drawing Inside!"
The Golgi apparatus, also known as the Golgi complex or Golgi body - the post office of cell, is an essential organelle found in most eukaryotic cells. If you have ever wondered how proteins get modified and transported inside our cell, this organelle does it all.
yes,
It plays a vital role in modifying, sorting, and packaging proteins and lipids for delivery to targeted destinations inside or outside the cell.
Structure of the Golgi Apparatus
The Golgi apparatus is made up of a series of curved, flattened membrane sacs stacked on top of each other, these are called cisternae. The main structural component of golgi apparatus.
It has three main regions:
Cis face: The receiving side(Entry face) closest to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and receives vesicles from the Endoplasmic Reticulum.
Medial region: The central layers where most modifications occur.
Trans face: The shipping side(Exit face) where modified products ( proteins and lipids) are sorted and packaged into vesicles and releases these modified products.
Functions of the Golgi Apparatus
The Golgi body acts as a cellular post office. Some of its major functions include:
Protein Modification: It modifies proteins received from the ER, such as adding sugar molecules to form glycoproteins and transports different parts of cell. Also breakdown proteins into small and active fragments.
Lipid Transport and Modification: Lipids are processed and transport to various parts of the cell.
Packaging of Products: The Golgi packages cellular secretions such as proteins and lipids into vesicles for transport.
Lysosome Formation: It produces and packages special enzymes within vesicles (lysosomes) for use within cell, which are vital for digestion and waste processing in the cell.
Secretion: The Golgi apparatus is crucial for the secretion of hormones and enzymes in glandular cells.
Protect the cell: It prevents destruction of cells.
Synthesize carbohydrate: carbohydrates are synthesized in it.
Products of the Golgi Apparatus
The Golgi apparatus produces various important products such as:
Glycoproteins and glycolipids
Lysosomes
Secretory vesicles containing hormones or enzymes
Importance in Cellular Function
Without the Golgi apparatus, the cell would not be able to properly deliver proteins and lipids to their intended destinations. It ensures that each cellular product is correctly modified, packaged, and labeled.
Functions of golgi apparatus
1. Remodeling
2 . Modification
3. packing
Fun Fact
The Golgi apparatus was discovered by Camillo Golgi, an Italian scientist, in 1898. It was the first organelle discovered using a light microscope.
